0353--MINIATURE RACING YACHTS AND HOW TO BUILD THEM
by Thomas Darling
WITH OVER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DIAGRAMS, SETS OF DESIGNED LILNES AND OFFSETS, PHOTGRAPHS AND TABLE GRAPHS
PUBLISHERS' NOTE--MINIATURE RACING YACHTS, by Thomas Darling, is fully illustrated by drawings and plans. The sport of racing model yachts is much more widespread than is generally realized. Many cities have their clubs where serious racing is indulged in, and there are frequent international races between a number of different countries, including England, France, Spain, Holland, and the United States. In addition to the real experts—who build their own boats—there are many manual training courses throughout the country where an increasing number of boys are being taught how to build model yachts. The author of this book has not only had a wide experience in naval engineering and construction but has also been a teacher of manual training, with the result that he has been able to write a book which will be of equal use both to the novice and to the expert. Starting with simple types and going on to those more advanced many plans are reproduced and instructions given so that in the end the attentive reader should be able not only to build but also design his own model yacht. The explanatory text and numerous diagrams of this book will prove invaluable to the amateur enthusiast who likes to build and sail miniature yachts for the pure fun of it, to the racing-model yachtsman, and to the teacher of mechanic arts, especially the numerous manual-training teachers who are adding model yacht building to their courses of study. Mr. Darling, who has had wide experience in naval engineering and construction, and has also taught manual training, has written a book that will be equally useful to the novice and the expert. Starting with types of craft and the features that recommend them for use the author considers the three methods of building a hull, the making of fin keels and cast ballast, spar and fitting making, the construction of steering gears, sails, rigging, designing, and how to tune-up and sail a miniature yacht. Every step in each department of yacht building is fully illustrated with scale diagrams, plans, and tables and there are numerous photographs of completed models in their element. In addition to the prolific illustrations, there are a great number of large-scalel pocketed plates (too lage to reproduce here with any clarity) which provide complete design and building information.
