STEAMER BUILDING by Percival Marshall, C.I. Mech.E. A Practical Handbook on the Design and construction of Model Steamer Hulls, Deck fittings, and Other Details. With 53 Illustrations From the Preface--This little volume will, it is hoped, prove of great service to the large class of model engineers whose interest lies in steamboats and their construction. It is intended both to aid the amateur designer in building the hull, and to provide designs for those who do not feel sufficiently skilled in that part of the work. To that end the descriptions have been arranged so that any reader who wishes to depart from the actual designs submitted can do so without difficulty and with the assurance of successful results. It has been found advantageous to keep separate the design and construction of steamer hulls, and the matter relating to the boilers and machinery. This arrangement has provided increased space for dealing at greater length with each part of the subject, and in the present book will be found not only descriptions of hulls for various types of vessels, but many general hints of importance to model steamboat owners, together with chapters on deck fittings, etc., for those who care for realistic appearances. Much of the matter has been culled from the pages of The Model Engineer, having been contributed thereto by amateurs and others who have had experience in such work, and to whom acknowledgment is due: for present use, however, these descriptions have been carefully revised. |
