The author begins this book with "Once upon a time I built a schooner..." But this is not, nor did the author intend, a fairy tale. Mr. Martyr teaches some extremely useful points of seamanship and shares the fears and anxieties that accompnay the constructrion of a fine vessel. Out of print for some years, this book has long been known as a most entertaining life-history of a schooner from design through building, trials and, alas, to her tragic end.
