THE BOOK OF CANOEING How to Buy or Make Your Canoe and Where to Take It by Alec R. Ellis Although published in 1935, and making allowances for the changes in the waterways which have certainly occurred since that time, Ellis is a valuable addition to the modern canoeists library by virtue of its timeless advice in the handling and building of canoes. With the substitution of some modern materials, the budding canoeist can quite probably build himself a fine little craft with the aid of this title, and be proud of the outcome and have many fine adventures therein. In fact, complete instructions (including scaled patterns) are included for the construction of a 16-foot kayak. We were much taken with the foreword to this title, and reproduce it herewith: "From what I have read of the pages which follow I feel that this book will fulfill the purpose for which it is written, that is to encourage the sport of canoeing. Any effort to bring to the youth of the nation the value of this form of sport is well worthy of support. It is a manly, health-giving pastime, suitable, and indeed valuable to all types of youth. It would certainly help to develop resourcefulness, independence, a spirit of adventure, a cool head, and physical health: and it is an antidote to many of the evils of a machine age of uncreative occupations. . . .I trust that this publication will be widely read with the hope that it will induce many of the youth of the nation to take up a pastime which will be of value to themselves and to the Empire of which we are so proud to belong.
