The Essex of course, was the famous Salem frigate in the war of 1812 that created so much havoc among British shipping until cornered in Valparaiso by the British Frigate Phoebe and the Sloop-of-War Cherub. This young persons book describes the experiences of young Midshipman Stuart on the Essex in the cruise up to and including the last and final battle with the Phoebe and the Cherub under Captain (later Admiral) Porter. Another worthy on board at this time was young David Farragut, who, as Admiral, would have such an influence in the American Civil War. A thrilling tale and great history for the young ones!  For aother story featuring David Farragut as the main character on the Essex, see The Cruise of the Essex , by  Frank Sheridan, alson in this list and for a description of the building of this noble frigate, go to The Building of the Essex .
