SMALL YACHTS: Their Design and Construction
by C.P. Kunhardt
Of all the books we have most assiduously searched out, this is our greatest prize to date! WoodenBoat™ Magazine did a reprint in 1985 which is now also out of print, but this 1887 edition by Forest and Stream is a massive work. WoodenBoat's reprint only included about a third of the content and was limited entirely to the design plates and commentary upon them. There is a wealth of additional information in the book of great interest to the designer--amateur or professional. The table of contents includes the following topics contained within the listed sections: INTRODUCTORY: The Model and the Draft; The Draftsman's Office; The Yacht on Paper and in Block; The Three Plans; The Model; Taking Off. ELEMENTS OF DESIGN: Resistance; Displacement; Stability, Rig and its Principles; Beam and its Relations; Balance and its Object; Handiness; Centreboard and Keel; Design in its Unity; The Computations; Theory and Practice Compared; ILLUSTRATIONS OF TYPE: Classification by Type; Centreboard Catboats; Keel Catboats; Light-Draft Centreboard Sloops; Deep Centreboard Sloops; Light Draft Keel Yachts; Deep Draft Keel Yachts; Compromise Keel and Centreboard Yacht; Beamy Cutters; Cutters of Moderate Beam; Cutters of Small Beam; Yachts of Special Class. (This section, Illustrations of Type, was the only section included in WoodenBoat's excellent reprint.) SINGLE-HAND YACHTING; The Boat and Her Equipment; Concerning Safety; Concerning Rig; Concerning Model; Some Notable Single-Handers; GENERAL INFORMATION: Fitting Out; In Commission; Laying Up; Boat Building; Yachts' Boats; Steering Gear; Yacht Clubs; Sailing Rules; Yachts' Papers; Receipts, and Useful Tables. Our edition reproduces the elephant folio sizing (11" X 17") of the original.
