*THE  CRUISE OF THE ESSEX
or; Making the Stars & Stripes Respected
by Frank Sheridan
The principal character in this patriotic tale is David Glasgow Farragut; who would ultimately be an Admiral in the United States Navy. At the time of the cruise of the Essex he was a midshipman on board. At this time his age was just eleven! And he had already been in the navy for two years! At the time of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 (the time frame of this story), in the navies of both England and the United States young boys served as officers and as powder monkeys on board the men-of-war. The frigate Essex was no exception. This is the story of the famous cruise of the Essex from  New York, down the coasts of the Americas, around the Horn and into the Pacific. During this cruise she was such a force against British shipping, that England sent two frigates after her to destroy her. In the course of the voyage, the Essex spent time in the Marquesas Islands for refitting and repairs and the officers and crew found themselves embroiled in tribal warfare. Ultimately, after leaving the Marquesas, the Essex put into the neutral port of Valparaiso. There after much sparring and feinting, the British frigate Phoebe ultimately destroyed her. First published in 1898. Farragut's exploits are further explored in another title listed here, Our Naval Heroes , and another story of the Essex can be found in Midshipman Stuart, or: The Last Cruise of the Essex , and the story of  The Building of the Essex is contained in one of our booklets.
