THE SEA
by Jules Michelet
What better title to start off this section than The Sea by Michelet. A notable French historian and anthropologist at the turn of the century, (a volume of his was carried by Stevenson on his Inland Voyage ), here Michelet turns his attention to the mysterious, dominating, seducing, bewitching sea. That medium upon which we cruise and without which we could not survive. This lovely volume has a little bit of everything; scholarly studies of the smallest of the sea's inhabitants, romantic stories of storms, careful and loving views of the shore and the foreshore. The illustrations are nothing short of extraordinary; eight full-page paintings of the sea in every aspect; from the tropic storm to the glittering, arctic silence. First published in 1875 . 8 beautiful full-page, sepia-tone illustrations.
