THE SHIP'S MEDICINE CHEST
and First Aid at Sea
United States Public Health Service and the War Shipping Administration
This is a much weightier tome than the preceding and thus is much more comprehensive. In nine very complete chapters, seven appendices a glossary and an index, it covers: Historical Introduction; The Human Body--Its Structure and Function; Hygiene, Sanitation, and Preventive Medicine; The Sickbay and Medicine Chest; General Nursing Care; First Aid and the Emergency Treatment of Injuries; The Classification and Treatment of Diseases; Medical Advice by Radio; and Birth and Death at Sea. All but the last chapter should be something that cruiser's could well be advised to prepare for. There are a multitude of instructional black and white illustrations, as well as a number of colour plates illustrating various diseases (not for the squeamish here). Something like this should be in every cruiser's library. First published in 1947.
