THE MEDICAL COMPEND FOR COMMANDERS OF NAVY VESSELS
This volume to accompany the medicine chest
by U.S. Bureau of Medicine and Surgery
One always hopes never to need such a volume, but that is every reason to have it on board. This text was published by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and was designed to be kept with the medicine box on board a ship to which no member of the Medical Department of the United States Navy is attached. There is no table of contents but the subjects covered include a complete list of medical supplies to be carried in the medicine box, first aid, special diseases (especially tropical), venereal disease, preventive medicine and a comprehensive glossary. It is to be hoped that the chapters on chemical warfare, deaths and quarantine will not be needed today by the small-boat cruiser. The drug recommendations may be a bit dated but all the rest of the medical advice is still cogent. First published in 1944.
