FOUR MONTHS IN A SNEAKBOX
by Nathanial H. Bishop
A boat voyage of 2,600 miles down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and along the Gulf of Mexico. Author of A Thousand Miles Walk Across South America, and The Voyage of The Paper Canoe . The Sneakbox is a boat unique to the Barnegat Bay area of Southern New Jersey, and was primarily used for gunning for ducks. The deck was somewhat flat aft, for carrying the decoys out to the bay, and the boat had a very low profile to help conceal the hunter. The boat is still used by today and early examples can be seen at The Barnegat Bay Decoy and Baymen's Museum at the new Tuckerton Seaport at Tuckerton, New Jersey, just a few miles north of Atlantic City. The same kudos are due to this work as were awarded to his Voyage of the Paper Canoe. This book is truly not to be missed by any interested in small boat voyaging and the history of America. Our edition improves on the original slightly in making the route maps two color. Bishop's route, as reproduced on the maps of the original, was almost invisible. We have enlarged the maps and retraced the route in color for better legibility. For those with an interest in the design of this boat, please see Canoe and Boat Building for the Amateur by W.P. Stephens in this title list. He covers the design of this boat in his book. Also see The Barnegat Bay Sneakbox: It's History, Design and Construction in the Boat Building List.
